It struck me the other day that less really is more. It’s also been my mantra these past couple of weeks “clean living is good”. Here at TYP HQ we focus a lot on increasing the payload; we like to keep adding, topping up, and going a little bit further. But there needs to be balance. Space and room to breath and think; regain focus and sharpen your senses.

Yacht “Don’t Fight The Darnkess” (DFA)

I’ve been trying to find a way to describe this track by uber-band, Yacht and i think Rolling Stone said it best with “Precisely programmed digital ear candy”. Signed to James Murphy’s cult label, DFA, it isn’t any surprise that i should now find myself obsessed with their output. Take the time to discover Yacht for yourselves.

Thanks to Regnsky for this.

A few good things came out of last night’s trip to the O2 to see Si and Hal performing with Dizzee Rascal

1. working out that if you tell the O2 car park attendants you’re off to the cinema you can bypass the hefty £25 parking fee and gaining access to the much more reasonable £3 per two-hour ‘other car-park’; 2. seeing Lilly Allen start a fight in the audience by pointing out her boyfriend’s location to a wearily pissed bunch of Kent idiots, and 3. hearing this classic between the live sets;

Shy FX’s superb remix of The Terrorist ‘The Chopper’ has long been in the record box – pre-digital pre-CD – and will now be making a well deserved comeback in all TYP DJ sets where applicable (open minded good-times audience need only apply)
The Other ‘Majestic’. Frenchmen take cover, this one’s incoming straight from across the channel and it’s gonna blow!

We of course first came across the pair when they asked to collaborate with Phonat on the now widely favoured ‘Pixelated‘.

Mofo Hifi label buddy and fellow fan of all things filthy and electronic, Sharooz, ain’t one to stay still for very long. Evident in this, the latest from his vaults, somewhere mid-London via Miami.

As the debut for his new label, La Bombe, Sharroz has demonstrated how firmly his ear is stuck to the (dance)floor. Getting much-hyped Miami wunderkind, SonicC, to give his forthcoming cut, ‘Saccharin‘, a damn good roughing-up is a touch. And one that hasn’t gone unnoticed in blogspehere. With the likes of Discodust, GottaDanceDirty, and Louis Louis all chomping at the bit to post the remix ahead of the game, this ‘high-rising’ sonic punch in the face gives La Bombe it’s first point on the score-card.

Sample & download the 192: Sharooz ‘Saccharin’ (SonicC Remix)

When we ain’t busting it hard with a fat bassline, we like things a bit deeper here at TYP HQ. Surfacing towards the end of last year and already boasting an array of taste-maker DJ/blog support, dadahack is a new cross-country production duo made up from 1-part James Banbury (based in UK) and 1-part Pete Davis (based in Sweden). The first material they have teased out under their dadahack moniker is a 5-track EP called ‘Hellos’; a heady mix of house, nu-disco, electro and sleaze.

The lead track ‘Hello Dust’ features vocals from Hannah Robinson, but for me it’s all about the sensational 11-minute gritty electro workout from Freelance Hellraiser that never ceases to tires my ears.

dadhack ‘Hello’ [Freelance Hellraiser RMX]: Sample and download

The ‘Hellos’ EP drops ahead of a clutch of forthcoming remixes and new tracks from the duo, paving the way for a dadahack album due for release in the next coming months. The full ‘Hellos’ EP bundled with alternative remixes by håkan lidbo and Tranquility Bass can be purchased in high quality via the dadahack homepage.

And now for something new from a man that need no introduction.. oh, except to say that his eponymous debut album is due for release in September and this is the lead.. Ladies and Gentlemen, i give you the MIGHTY Phonat!

‘Set Me Free’ is a brilliant fusion of the loveliest elements in both french house and the more melodic variations of current big room sound, combining huge riffs reminiscent of pryda or (gasp) deadmau5 with the edgey disco roots of daft punk and the soulful warmth of a fred falke production, in short: phonat delivers this season’s perfect peaktime anthem. check out the official video and the extended mix right here.

In order to reach out to an even greater audience, ‘Set Me Free’ has been remixed by Avicii, the latest ‘made man’ in the orbit of the Swedish House Mafia, mosh-pit dubstep terrorist High Rankin and the UKs hardest working french revolutionist and personal friend/peer of Phonat, Louis la Roche. The single with remixes just dropped on beatport today but you can preview all tunes in 192 kbps right here.

Also on remix duties there is Miami based house producer Robbie Rivera, The Tastemakers alter-ego, Soulmakers deliver something for the funkier floors whilst a big room trance mix comes from Nathan C & Ben Preston.

Discovered by Mofo Hifi Records, Goshi Goshi’s debut, ‘Lock Shot’ was massively hyped across blogspehere as well picking up support from Kissy Sellout, Andy George & Jaymo and The Loose Cannons. ‘Lock Shot’ went on to be signed to Norman Cook’s Southern Fried label and Goshi Goshi continued to make their mark with remixes of The Young Punx and Autokratz for the mighty Kitsune.

Naturally i’m keen to check out the boys perform live when i go to this year’s Wireless Festival in London’s Hyde Park on Saturday, but i jumped at the chance when i got the opportunity to pose them a couple of questions prior to the event.

As a DJ often away from home i was curious to see what challenges not living the 9-5 (the 22k job) presented the guys and how they dealt with them but also, am i the only one who gives serious consideration to where he might go if presented with a time-machine a la Back to the Future? You can but ask…

YMISKM:
We know that producing, recording and playing can take up the majority of time from your daily lives. How does your family or girlfriends respond to this routine you put yourselves through? Will there be a time when you have to move on from music?

Dukes:
Well there have been some failed relationships in the wake of making albums, djing, remixing and so on within the filthy dukes. It is an antisocial life style, although you are out and meeting people all the time, it ultimately means that at weekends when most couples or friends are hanging out, you are in an airport or a hotel in another country. Having said that though, this is the life style we have chosen and it can work, it just takes some effort from all parties, to travel with the band, go to festivals, clubs etc. It does mean your partner has to like your music of course. It also means during the week you have to make the effort too. I think if you want to make it work you can, but it is hard work and as we all work during the week too on various projects like record labels, producing promoting and so on. There are also so many positive things too, going to amazing festivals or staying in Paris for the weekend is quite a nice thing to offer a loved one in return for coming to gigs in Hull.

YMIKM:
You guys wake up one morning and there stands a shiny brand new ‘Delorean’ time-machine, what dates would you guys dial in and why?

Dukes:
At the moment I am pretty exhausted from Glastonbury and we are djing at Fabric on Friday then two festivals on Saturday so I could do with a little nap. I might choose 1900 and go and hang out with Matisse on a French hill side for a bit and have a long snooze. Then I would be ready for the weekend. However I would probably then get excited so pop back to 1968 and go to the Rolling Stones Rock N Roll circus, hang out with them and Keith Moon and see what mischief could take place. I might then just pop back a bit to 1960 and find Jean Luc Godard in Paris whilst he was making A Bout De Souffle, one of my favorite films. He went through some crazy head fucks thinking his film would be rubbish, so I would tell him everything was going to be ok and he would make a masterpiece, although that might ruin it I guess. Then I would move forward to 1973 and go and see Kraftwerk making Autobahn, it must have been so exciting knowing how revolutionary electronic music was then and that no one had really heard anything like it. They would have been working with Connie Plank who designed and made the mixing desk we have in our studio, he would have been using some of it to record Autobahn, so we could ask him why channel two never quite works properly. Ok I’m tired again now.

Thanks to the Dukes for indulging us. Filthy Dukes will be appearing live at this year’s Wireless Festival, held in London’s Hyde Park on the 4th and 5th of July - for further information on the line-up and how you can get tickets please visit www.wirelessfestival.co.uk
