A nice little breaksy public enemy mashup doing the rounds this week. I’m not sure on its background but apparently Zane Lowe played it. There was that big Bring the noise bootleg by Benny Benassi earlier this year, and a few good remixes of it then, but the sparse bassline garage/breaks approach here leaves more room for the rap to breath, which is a good thing.

It’s a well known fact that the music industry is in crisis at the moment. But there have been a number of developments recently that are getting really scary, and are starting to mean that the grassroots artists who make that “new music” we all want to hear, are becoming unable to make and distribute music any more. A new mash-up for you. I thought these would sit nicely together the moment I first heard “Ghosts N Stuff” ringing through from Phonat’s room next door! I had to re-record the strings and brass for Lola’s Theme myself with live players to clarify the harmony enough to make it gel, but hey, I do these kinds of things for you and you don’t get that kind of dedication from anyone else! ;-)

Me and Phonat did this remix for Gut Records well over a year ago now. We played it on our podcast and hence have quite a lot of enquiries about where you can buy it. The answer is… absolutely no-where… since Gut have now gone bankrupt, along with large number of other record labels.

I bumped into the Tastemakers at the (rather over packed and hellish) DJ magazine Top 100 DJs party at Ministry of Sound last week and basically it seems likely the track can never be released unless they buy it back from the administrators, which is unlikely to happen.

So we decided to just give it to you.

Its a little dated now… music has moved on a bit, but it still has plenty of merits, and I get regular requests for it.

Chase and Status are one of the most exciting Drum and bass production teams around. At the top of the game in their own scene, they have always been aspiring to break out of the Drum and Bass world and into the mainstream, much as their regular colleagues Pendulum have (Chase and Status have consistently supported Pendulum on tours around the world).

But there are some catches: The Drum and Bass world can be very critical of their own, and many DnB heads have all but disowned Pendulum, either for coming up with a sound that they do not believe is the ‘true sound’ or simply through not liking their success. Chase and Status are more than aware of this danger and are clearly looking for a way to win new fans without losing old ones.

Having heard most of the development of Chase and Status’ debut album in great detail (they shared our studio with us for much of the past 2 years) it is also clear that Will and Saul (real names) also feel somewhat constrained by the Drum and Bass genre, and wish to spread their wings into ‘proper songwriting’, dubstep, house and other genres. Once again, the challenge is, when they are so hot at their core sound, will moving away from their core competence risk them moving into an area where they aren’t at the top of their game?

What do you get if you cross the best club track of 2008 (Fake Blood – Mars) with the best club track of all time (Stardust – Music sounds better with you)? You get “Mars sounds better with me” of course.

Deltawave are a synth pop act hailing from the North of England (York) with both male and female vocals. As such they instantly remind you of great acts from the heyday of 80s synths, like Human League, New Order and the Thompson Twins. With their moody delivery and great ear for a catchy hook they really give me a great 80s flashback – in a good way, and they are great live too if you can catch them (they played supporting Shed 7 recently).

This is the title track from their “Strychnine and Soda EP” which is 2 years old today (and can be found on iTunes, Beatport etc). We’ve been waiting ever since for their debut album to be completed, and I certainly hope it will be finished soon, given that I heard a demo version that sounded damn finished to me about 3 years ago! Ho hum. These things can take a while to mature! Anyway. I REALLY love this track and I hope you will too.

How much nicer could we be to you? Here is an mp3 download of the brand new remix of our new track “MASHitUP” remixed by Berlin Battery master Shir Khan.

To quote Discodust Blog “as always, shir khan makes it tough to describe his sound and does what the track asks for – mashing it up with electro house style leads, rave signals, distorted e-guitar solos, baile funk drum rolls and a shuffled fidget groove – or in a less technical way: making it a fucking banger!”

download it. play it loud!

ANTHEM ALERT!!! This dynamite piece of ravey fidgety house is going to blow up! We used it to open and close our set at Privilege Ibiza this week and it is nothing but good stuff!
